Get to Know: Jordan Ferguson
In anticipation of our first ever release with acclaimed Chicago-based artist Jordan Ferguson, we sat down with him to ask him a few fun questions about his life and, of course, his remarkable art.
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born and raised in western Colorado, and am currently in Chicago.
What are your first artistic memories?
My first artistic memory was drawing dinosaurs in outer space with my mom!
How has your style evolved from over the years to now? Have you always dealt with the same themes?
My work has changed visually quite a bit over the years as I've grown as a person and as I started surrounding myself with different things in my life. I have found inspiration in a lot of different places, but I like to think iv stayed pretty true to the ideas of my work!
Could you tell us a bit about your work and this week's release with us, "Still Life Study?"
All my still-life works are focused on the complex relationships we have with the objects we choose to surround ourselves with and how they reinforce our ideas of the people we want to be while also portraying to the world the way we want others to see us.
What is a normal day like in the studio for you?
A normal day in the studio for me involves loud music, a few PBRs, and forcing myself to be vulnerable and let ideas flow out of me lol.
What is the hardest part of creating a work?
I think the hardest part of making work is accepting that once a piece leaves my studio I no longer have control of how the work is perceived, I have to let people make their own relationships with the work, I just hope it's a good one.
And what is the most rewarding part?
I think the most rewarding part of making work is the pride that comes along with finishing a piece. Making a painting is a very profound process that can way very heavy on you. so once you finish one it almost feels like you were able to get something off your chest that you have been holding back for a long time. its a real sense of pride for me.
When you're not working in the studio, what are you up to?
When I'm not in the studio thinking/working on my own paintings I am often consumed by my other hobbies including screenprinting, skateboarding/scootering, and music.
What can we look forward to from you for the rest of 2024?
For the rest of 2024, I have some shows lined up in the first half of the year in Los Angeles and Denver. Besides that it's really just putting my head down and getting to work and continuing to push my art as far as I possibly can!
